Who is Sarah Yak?
When I was a kid I wanted to be an artist. I wanted to create stories, travel and learn new skills. And the people around me entertained this dream of mine until I entered High School. My parents and society told me to do one thing - go to college, get a degree and pursue a 9-5 job. But I felt so strongly pulled to do something else - to find a way to travel and make a living doing something I love.
Ever since I was a child, I wanted to be an artist.
At the age of 20, I dropped out of college and built a camper-van with out any previous building knowledge or experience.
For four years I traveled in that van, driving all around the country. I have mined for crystals in Arizona, done animal rights activism in California, soaked in remote hot springs in Idaho, rescued a dog in Mexico and foraged for mushrooms in Oregon. Life on the road isn’t always easy, but I have learned so much form living off grid - and I love this lifestyle so much that I built a second camper-van to continue my travels.
Why live in a van?
I started traveling part time in college out of an old Honda Accord. At the time, I didn’t have much money and it was the only way I could afford to see the world. It wasn’t comfortable by any means but I traveled to five states I had never been to and I had never felt more happy. During this time period I realized all the benefits of living on the road. I didn’t have to pay rent, I could chase good weather, I had more time to pursue art and I could live close to nature. I ended up building out a Ford Transit van so I could live more comfortably on the road, but the benefits of this lifestyle can be attained on any budget and in any vehicle.
Is living in a van lonely?
I have always believed that alone time is necessary to fully love ourselves. I spent 2 years traveling solo and even though I did get lonely sometimes, that time was very important to me.
After a couple years of doing the inner work I met my girlfriend Tori. We were long distance for a year but I eventually asked her to move into my van with me. We traveled to over ten countries together and all around the United States before we returned to our hometown to build out two vans side by side.
Did it all work out in the end?
I started making videos when I was in High School. I fell in love with the art of storytelling through writing, imagery and videography. I wanted to master the craft and I knew that the only way to do that was through practice, so I vowed to post a video every week. And I did. I posted every week on Sunday, received my silver play button and I’m still as in love with the craft as I’ve ever been.
